Medicare Supplement Insurance can be complex if you are not educated on the details of the benefits available to you in each new plan year.

Once enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (MA) plan, you turn your Original Medicare (OM) benefits over to a private insurance company, which in turns provides coverage, administers your plan and pays your claims. Your “Medicare” is converted to an equivalent of a commercial policy, and you are subject to its guidelines and limitations until the next plan year.

Remember, you can join, switch or leave a MA plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (mid-October to early December). You may join a MA plan anytime during the year only if the MA plan you choose has a 5-star rating, or if you have just become eligible. If you are trying to correct a premature decision related to a plan selection may only drop out of an MA plan and return to an Original Medicare (OM) during the Open Enrollment Period (January 1 and March 7).
